Athletes Kill it in Kona

It's the penultimate event in long distance triathlon where the best of the best show up to battle each other--the Ironman World Championships. TriBella was fortunate to have two team representatives race on the Big Island this year.

Sonja Weick

Multiple time Kona veteran, Sonja Wieck, was back with a vengeance in an effort to win a bowl, which means getting on the podium (top 5). She's been gritting out long training weeks all year with the goal to be one of the top athletes in her age group. Crazy strong winds blew in and caused all sorts of havoc among athletes but Sonja channeled Madame Pele and said, "bring it!" Tough conditions suit her racing style and for proof of that, take a look at her hard earned bowl! Congrats Sonja on your second place finish!! Very well deserved!

Kimberly Shenk

Kimberly Shenk is a ray of sunshine. She has a joy for life and training, and works hard for her results. Her mantle is well decorated with the fruits of her labor from 70.3 and shorter races, but she decided to step up to Ironman racing this year at Boulder. That first effort earned her a spot to Kona. Kimberly lived in Hawaii during her stint in the military so Kona felt like a homecoming. Like many, she faced some of the toughest conditions on record, but she smiled through it all and looks forward to racing there again in the future.
